The Trap of a Mom Census

Identifying when social media has trapped you in the distraction of comparison.

In reading my One Year Bible this morning, I learned of David's struggle with comparison. Like the 2020 census being conducted in the US right now, King David sent for a detailed report concerning the size of his troops compared to the size of his enemies. His fear: falling short as a king and leading Isreal to defeat.

The Word tells us that Satan was like an annoying bee buzzing in his ear, sturring doubt and comparison in King David's mind. These lies took root, overshadowing the countless victories David's military had just experienced.

David's story is ridiculously relevant. If we've heard it once, we've heard it a dozen times. "Momma, you are awesome." "Momma, don't compare yourselves to others." But, the reality of social media is simple: it was made to display other's lives in a glamorous manner. Unless you delete your account and remove the app from your phone, comparison is something you are actively choosing to manage.

So, then, what do we do? Because it is NOT okay to escape into the world of social media, looking at everyone else while ignoring the insecurities it can sometimes surface in our hearts.

#1 Look at your own troops

God has granted you the ultimate job. YOU were chosen to momma your babies because you have everything they need from a mom. Even if your season feels like a hurricane, you were still chosen at this exact time to play your role

#2 Census your allies

If we're going to zero-in on our social media at all, let's take a good look at that "following" list. The simple act of filtering who you allow to influence your social media experience can make a night and day difference. While accounts may not be negative, or even boastful, some people we follow stir up the comparison struggle in us, sometimes with no rhyme or reason. It's okay to unfollow the accounts that bring out toxic feelings. Sometimes we just need to unfollow for a short season while we overcome this struggle. Make sure that you're engaging with accounts that sharpen you towards Jesus and running the race he has set before you.

#3 Learn a New Battle Cry

David repented of the foolishness that he showed when he sent for a census. From there, he realigned himself with the truth - that God had promised protection, provision, and blessings over the Israelites, and his promises NEVER fail. In the same way, ask the Holy Spirit to help you identify the grace He's given you for each day. Like baby-sized bites, we need Jesus to give us our portion.

The truth is, the enemy's use of distraction through comparison is not necessarily intended to send you in a depressing spiral, (while, unfortunately, this is a real side-effect), it's meant to keep you stagnant. Distractions are a masterful tactic. They keep you from doing anything.

Comparison, especially for moms, keeps us from walking out our highest calling - raising the babies He has entrusted to us. Don't let yourself conduct a Momma Census, becoming trapped in comparison rather than operating in the joys of being a mom!

All my love,

Lyd
