A Whimsical Nursery

Writer's picture: Lydia RyalsLydia Ryals

My memories of being a little girl are filled with the wonder, magic, and romance. My heart longs for Hadley to experience this same childhood, so, when designing her nursery, I knew I wanted to create a space where her imagination could flourish. This nursery needed to be a place where a princess could rest her head.

I changed my mind a dozen times when designing Hadley's nursery. I bought manufactured accent items only to return them, for fear that they wouldn't help accomplish my goal. With the help of those dearest to me and my girl, we created the perfect space. Each element was cultivated from a place of true adoration for this girl and I am so excited to share our DIY nursery creation.

I wanted to incorporate a sense of whimsy in the nursery's colors, while still maintaining the "baby girl" feel in the asthetics. The yellows, teals, and greens added a factor of surprise that was fun to play with.

Hadley's antique crib was gifted to us. My mom painted it cream, which contrasted the nursery's walls, (Alabaster by Sherwin Williams). The crib's skirt offered feminity in the delicate floral pattern. I also love how the skirt's smaller pattern off-sets the bold look of the rug (see below).

The frame was a steal! Since it was a custom piece that had been returned, I purchased it for less than $40! It serves well in highlighting the rainbow wall hanging, which became the accent piece and inspiration for the entire nursery. My mom made the rainbow out of foam (sort of a small pool-noodle) and yarn. I've linked a tutorial to create this rainbow at the bottom of the page.

The chair is one of the most precious pieces I have ever inherited. Once the chair that Zach's grandmother would sit in and work on sewing, my mother-in-law stripped it down and reupholstered it for Hadley. She spent countless hours reworking the springs, creating the lining, and discovering hundreds of sewing needles... it was a labor of true love. It happens to be the coziest chair I have ever sat in. I love the subtle pink fabric against the original wood legs. We had the option to paint them, but I'm so pleased with the contrast. The pompom wall hanging was also a labor of love. Both my parents spent hours with cramping fingers creating this for Hadley. I've linked a tutorial to make your own below... just be prepared for frequent finger-stretching breaks!

Hadley's wardrobe was an amazing find from a local antique shop. I usually leave the doors open to admire its frilly occupants. I want to use this opportunity to share some organizing tidbits I've discovered that make life so much easier! The pink basket is where I toss the clothes she's grown out of (it stings whenever I add to that pile!!) and I use curtain clips to hang her hairbows! I love seeing them on display :)

These hooks are the smallest size you can find at Walmart. I love this alternative to mounted wall displays or throwing them all in a drawer.

That's it for our virtual tour! Our prayer is that this sweet girl finds hours of play and joy in this space made just for her.

I've created a list of all of her nursery items below for you.

All my love,

Lyd
